Tapgift documentation

Everything a Shopify merchant needs to install Tapgift, ship a first gift, and handle the edge cases.

01Install in 5 minutes

  1. In your Shopify admin, open the App Store and search Tapgift. Click Add app.
  2. Approve the OAuth scopes. Tapgift requests write_orders, read_orders, write_draft_orders - the minimum needed to update a gift order with the recipient's address.
  3. You'll land on the Tapgift onboarding screen inside Shopify. Set your sender name (defaults to your store name) and your accent color.
  4. Send yourself a test gift email from the onboarding form to confirm delivery.
  5. Toggle Enable gift checkout. The Checkout UI Extension automatically appears above the shipping-address step on every checkout.

02How a gift order flows

A buyer adds a product to cart and toggles “Send as a gift - no address needed” at checkout. They enter the recipient's email (or choose to share the link themselves) and an optional note. A $0.99 line item labeled “Gift delivery fee” is added automatically.

When the buyer pays, Shopify creates the order with a placeholder shipping address. Tapgift receives the order via the orders/create webhook and generates a 10-character claim token. If the buyer supplied an email, we send a branded claim link there within ~60 seconds. If the buyer chose to share it themselves, the order confirmation gives them the link to send from their own phone via the native iOS/Android share sheet.

The recipient taps the link, lands at claim.tapgift.app/c/<token>, enters their address (with Google Places autocomplete), and picks a delivery date. Tapgift PATCHes your Shopify order with the verified address and releases the fulfillment hold.

The order now looks like any normal order in your admin - fulfill, pick, pack, ship.

03Pricing + billing

Free to install. No monthly subscription, no setup fee, no contract.

First 5 claimed gifts free per merchant install. Use that allowance to try the full flow end-to-end before you pay anything.

After the trial, $0.99 per claimed gift, billed via Shopify's usage-based app billing on your normal monthly Shopify invoice. Your buyers pay the same $0.99 at checkout as a “Gift delivery fee” line item, so the net cost to you is $0 - you're a pass-through.

Monthly cap. At install you approve a monthly cap (default $50). Shopify will not charge you above the approved amount. Raise or lower the cap any time from Tapgift > Billing inside your Shopify admin - changes require fresh one-tap approval via Shopify's consent screen.

No charge for unclaimed gifts. If the recipient doesn't confirm within 10 days, the order auto-refunds to the buyer and you owe nothing. We absorb the delivery cost on our side.

If your monthly cap is hit mid-month, new gifts are still delivered to recipients - billing for those gifts is deferred and replays automatically once you raise the cap. You'll see a banner in Tapgift > Billing and get an email when this happens.

04Delivery + compliance

Tapgift delivers gifts two ways, chosen by the buyer at checkout. Email: we send the recipient a branded claim link by email. Every message carries clear sender identification and a one-click unsubscribe link, as required by CAN-SPAM.

Shareable link: the buyer can instead choose to send the claim link themselves. After checkout, they get the link and share it from their own phone via the native iOS/Android share sheet (Messages, WhatsApp, email, anywhere). Because the buyer sends it person-to-person, no carrier registration or marketing consent is involved.

Tapgift sends no SMS. There is no Twilio, no A2P 10DLC registration, and no phone number collected at checkout. If a recipient unsubscribes from a gift email, we suppress future Tapgift emails to that address.

05Co-branding the claim page

In Tapgift > Settings, toggle Co-brand the claim page to override the default violet accent. Pick from four presets (violet, evergreen, terracotta, indigo) or enter a custom hex.

We check WCAG AA contrast against white when you save a custom color and surface a warning if it's borderline. Your store name and a (future) logo upload also appear at the top of the claim page.

06Fulfilling a claimed gift

No new workflow. Once the recipient confirms, the order's shipping address updates and the fulfillment hold is released - you fulfill exactly like any other order in your Shopify admin.

Tapgift adds the tag tapgift to every gift order so you can filter, build flows, or trigger downstream apps off it.

07What happens if no one claims

If the gift was delivered by email, the recipient gets reminder emails at 24 hours and 5 days. (Buyer-shared links have no automatic reminders — the buyer can resend the link any time.)

At 10 days, Tapgift automatically refunds the buyer in full via the Shopify Refund API, cancels the order, and notifies the buyer by email. You never have inventory committed to a gift that won't be claimed.

The buyer can place a new order with a different email any time.

08GDPR + privacy

Tapgift implements all three Shopify-mandated GDPR compliance webhooks (customers/data_request, customers/redact, shop/redact). Recipients can also email privacy@tapgift.app directly to request a copy or deletion of their data.

When the recipient confirms, we add their shipping address to the merchant's Shopify order so the merchant can ship to them.

09Troubleshooting

The recipient didn't get the email

Check the gift detail page in Tapgift > Gifts. If the event log shows email_failed, the address is invalid or the message bounced. You'll have received an email with a link to update the recipient address. (For buyer-shared-link gifts there is nothing to deliver on our side — the buyer sends the link directly.)

The buyer can't see the gift toggle at checkout

The Checkout UI Extension requires Shopify Plus or Checkout Extensibility. On non-Plus stores you can use the Tapgift Theme App Extension block on the product page as a fallback (set up in Tapgift > Settings > Storefront).

The claim page shows “Link not found”

The token is invalid, expired (older than 10 days), or already claimed. Each gift token is single-use.
